Welcome Baby Bags at the Guilderland Public Library encourage literacy and engagement.

Parents and grandparents who reside in the Guilderland Central School District are welcome to pick up a “Welcome Baby Bag” at the Guilderland Public Library. The bags contain literature for parents about early literacy, brain development, library services and fun things for babies, such as a new board book, baby maracas, and more.

There is a limit of one bag per baby, while supplies last. The bags were sponsored by NBT Bank Guilderland, and the maracas were donated by Ms. Erin Lancraft.

This is just part of our effort to increase services to children from birth up to age 2 and their caregivers.  In the past year-and-a-half, we’ve hosted sensory play times for babies, parent social hours, and child-development experts covering topics such as sleep, nutrition, routines, and soothing crying infants.

We’ve also increased our family literacy offerings for babies. Baby Bounce (birth to 18 months) is offered Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., and Waddler Time (for new walkers up to 24 months) is offered Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

Babies are also welcome at our ever-popular 3 Little Birds Music and Movement class on Friday mornings at 10:30 a.m. This program resumes May 3.

Trustees meet

All are welcome to attend our board of trustees meetings. The next regular business meeting occurs Thursday April 18 at 7 p.m. in our Tawasentha Room.

I Heart Art

Tweens and teens are invited to push the boundaries of creativity and construct their best (or worst) “disasterpiece” on Monday, April 22, at 7 p.m. You may be pleasantly surprised by how much you enjoy the process (bad art - good fun), and pleased with the final result!

On Tuesday, April 23 at 2 p.m., grades 2 to 5 are invited to Meet the Impressionists. We’ll learn about prominent artists of this style, then participants can try their hand at an impressionist-style painting.  Please register for both programs online, by phone or in person.

Holiday notes

Please note that no library programs are scheduled for Friday April 19 or Saturday April 20, due to Passover.  The library will be closed Sunday April 21 for Easter.

Cookbook Club

Join us on Wednesday, April 24 at 3 p.m. (vacation week) for a special kid-friendly edition of our popular Cookbook Club: Cooking With Your Kids!

Select a recipe from America’s Test Kitchen: The Complete Cookbook for Young Chefs or Good Housekeeping: Kids Cook! at our Information Desk, then bring your dish to the library to share. Sample everyone else’s creations too!

One lucky participant will win a copy of the cookbook of his or her choice. For grades 3 to 8 with an adult; please pre-register.

Disney Trivia

How much Disney knowledge lurks beneath your mouse ears? Come find out at Disney Trivia Night, April 26 at 6 p.m.

Assemble your team (up to five people, with at least one person age 16+) to compete for top honors on a night of family fun during April vacation week.

Feel free to bring dinner as food for thought; Disney costumes encouraged! Register for online, by phone or in person.

Library renewal

For the past 18 months, we’ve listened to over 2,100 citizens of Guilderland voice their opinions on the library’s needs, and now our May 21 referendum is fast approaching. Come to an open meeting to hear about the final proposal — how it will meet present and future community needs, and what it will cost if approved.

Library Director Tim Wiles, Architect Paul Mays, and Library Board members will be on hand to present this information and answer your questions Thursday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m.

“Miracle Met” Art Shamsky

Meet Art Shamsky of the 1969 World Series Champion Miracle Mets and co-author Erik Sherman Saturday,  May 18 at 2 p.m., featuring their book After the Miracle: the Lasting Brotherhood of the 1969 Mets. Catapulting from “Lovable Losers” to World Series Champions in an improbably magical season no one saw coming, this is a rags-to-riches story that every Mets fan — and every baseball fan — will appreciate.

Mr. Shamsky will sign copies of the book, priced at $30, plus one other item for anyone who has also purchased a book.  Please register online, by phone or in person.

Leland talks about happiness

On Tuesday May 21 at 7 p.m., award-winning journalist and author John Leland will be here to discuss his book, “Happiness is a Choice You Make: Lessons From a Year Among the Oldest Old.” Leland will share his fascinating and inspiring experience of following six elders in New York City in a series of articles for The New York Times — a series that ultimately coalesced into a single book — followed by a book sale and signing.

This program is made possible through a collaboration with the Albany Guardian Society. Please note:  although this program is already at maximum capacity, we will livestream this presentation on our Facebook page, as well as recording it.
