Guilderland Library Notes for Wednesday, April 12, 2023

The Enterprise — Michael Koff

Timothy Wiles, director of the Guilderland Public Library, speaking at the April 5 event, stressed the importance of proper disposal of medication and noted the library regularly partners with the Guilderland Police to dispose of unused medications, no questions asked. The next disposal event is set for Saturday, April 22, at the library, which is located at 2228 Western Ave.

Narcan, explains Elizabeth Whalen, Albany County’s health commissioner, is “a medication that counteracts the effect of opioid medication and therefore can stop a fatal reaction … Just one sniff into the nose can make the difference between life and death.” Whalen spoke at the Guilderland Public Library on Wednesday, April 5, regarding the availability of Narcan doses in the library’s lobby. This initiative, in conjunction with Catholic Charities, makes tools to combat the growing opioid epidemic more accessible. Other Narcan units have been installed at Albany Public Library's Washington Avenue branch, the Berne Public Library, the Capital City Rescue Mission and the University at Albany.

Kerry Ann Mendez, an award-winning garden educator, author, design consultant, and proprietor of Perennially Yours (https://pyours.com), will open our eyes via Zoom to dazzling native specimens that attract accolades as well as pollinators.
