Guilderland Library Notes for Thursday, January 9, 2014

Jazz pianist Cole Broderick will lead a tour of the Great American Songbook at the Guilderland Public Library on Sunday, Jan. 12.

Many people are so careful about what they eat and serve their families these days, and if you are among them, you should attend the Gluten/Allergen-Free Baking for Busy People class on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m., at the Guilderland Public Library

Cookbook author and food blogger Colette Martin had to re-invent the way her family ate because her son developed multiple food allergies. That included finding other ways to make baked goods, a mainstay in so many kitchen repertoires. The result: Great recipes that she gathered in her book, Learning to Bake Allergen-Free: A Crash Course for Busy Parents on Baking without Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Soy or Nuts. As part of our continuing series, Tastes Good/Get Healthy @ the Guilderland Library, Martin will be here to share her strategies for baking allergen- and gluten-free, and she’ll demonstrate some wonderful holiday baking methods. Copies of her book will be available to purchase, and there will be samples to try, as well.

This will be a very well-attended cooking class, so you must register by calling 456-2400, ext. 2 to reserve your place.

Second Sunday Concert series

The Guilderland Public Library kicks off its 2014 Second Sunday Concert season with Cole Broderick on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m.

Broderick will delight us with his piano renditions of selections from South Pacific and other popular songs from the Great American Songbook spanning the 1920s to the 1960s.  He is heralded as the gold standard at the keyboard.

AARP’s Taxaide program

You can now make an appointment with an AARP Taxaide – for free tax-preparation and e-filing services – by calling the library at 456-2400, ext. 2.

Taxaide appointments start Monday, Feb. 3, and continue through April 14; appointments are held on Mondays and Saturdays at the library.

All Taxaide volunteers are trained and certified in cooperation with the IRS. They prepare personal Federal and New York State tax returns for taxpayers of all ages with low and moderate incomes.

You must make an appointment for this service; separate appointments are required for each taxpayer. Bring a copy of your 2012 return and all 2013 W-2s, 1099 statements, the purchase date and cost basis for any investments you sold, and supporting documents if you plan to itemize deductions. Taxaide volunteers are not able to complete returns with rental income or returns requiring Schedule C, or if you have a Health Savings Account. If filing a joint return, both taxpayers need to be present except in cases of illness or infirmity.
