BERNE — After Berne-Knox-Westerlo student Sam Gerardi's family home succumbed to a fire in May, Teachers Association members collected more than $1,200 in one week toward a laptop.

“Since Sam is always among the first to help anyone in need, his teachers wanted to help send him off with a good start,” Kelly Smith, the association’s president wrote in an e-mail.

At Houghton College, where Gerardi plans to study chemistry, science majors are required to have laptops.
