Science Lecture Series: Native American, Climatic, and Environmental Influences on Pine Barrens and Other Fire-Adapted Ecosystems of New York State from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. The Albany Pine Bush owes its existence to the role of fire in maintaining its unique combination of fire-adapted plant species. How long has fire been an important part of pitch pine barrens communities? When did pitch pine barrens and other fire-dependent plant communities such as grasslands and savannas first appear in our region? Did Native American use of fire play a part in the development of these communities? This talk summarizes ongoing doctoral dissertation research that examines the role of climate, environmental conditions, Native American land-use, and fire on the vegetation communities of New York State over the last several thousand years. Join us for snacks and discussion at 6:30 p.m, the lecture will begin at 7:00 p.m. Ages 15+. Free! Location: Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center, 195 New Karner Road, Albany, NY. Fee: Free!
