Science Lecture Series: Science in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve on Thursday, May 17, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve contains 76 wildlife Species of Greatest Conservation Need, several rare wetlands, and the best remaining global example of an inland pitch pine-scrub oak barrens; a globally rare, fire-dependent ecological community. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission (APBPC) staff and its academic partners use a variety of scientific disciplines (ecology, ornithology, botany, entomology, soils science, glacial geomorphology, hydrology, mammalogy and sociology) to meet the mandate for creating and managing a preserve consistent with NYS Environmental Conservation Law Article 46. Please join us for an evening lecture with Conservation Director Neil Gifford as he describes the science we use to understand what we need to do to restore a fully functional pine barren and how we know if our conservation work is not only successful but also understood and supported by the surrounding human community.
