“John Boyd Thacher, Wampum, and the NYS Museum” at Thacher Visitor Center on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 2:00 p.m. In 1989, the NY State Museum (NYSM) repatriated 22 wampum belts to the Onondaga Nation, including four belts originally purchased by John Boyd Thacher. Exhibition, drama and a lawsuit marked Thacher’s tenure as “owner” of the belts, which eventually entered the NYSM collections via Emma Treadwell Thacher. Today, the NYSM works to cultivate relationships with Native American communities through repatriation as well as growing a collection of contemporary Native American Art. Presented by Dr. Gwen Saul, anthropologist at the New York State Museum. Call 518-872-0800 for more information.
