Carol M. Fike
“Carol M. Fike, after a long struggle with many health issues, entered into Eternal Life on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024,” her family wrote in a tribute. She was 82 years old.
She was born in Rome, New York on March 29, 1942 to Elsie (née Bauer) Mathis and Frank Mathis. She grew up in Westmoreland, New York and attended elementary school and high school there. She moved on to Cortland College and graduated with a degree in teaching in 1962.
“After a short time as an elementary school teacher, she married her true love, Alan V. Fike in 1969 at their shared church, St. John’s Lutheran in Rome, New York,” her family wrote. “After living in Columbus, Ohio for a year, they moved and settled in Guilderland and in 1976 transitioned to a newly built house in Voorheesville where Carol lived for the rest of her life.
“Throughout her life, Carol enjoyed spending time with her church friends and family. She and Alan met at church and were in the same Confirmation class, where they enjoyed many fun activities with their church Walther League.
“After they were married, their friends at Christ Lutheran Church in Albany became their family. Carol worked as church secretary for many years, was active in the Church Council, and spent countless hours figuring out all the church finances as financial secretary. She was also the teacher and manager of the church’s Small Steps Preschool for many years.
“More recently, Carol enjoyed seeing her kids, but more especially her grandkids. When able, she loved to spend time with all four of them. In addition, she loved her two kitties, Buddy and Stormy.”
