Despite pandemic, Schoharie Valley Singers present holiday concert

Taken before the pandemic when singers could gather, the Schoharie Valley Singers posed for a picture. This year, they sang separately in their own homes and their voices have been melded for a free Christmas concert.

The Schoharie Valley Singers are offering a free online choral Christmas concert.

“Brightest & Best – A Virtual Concert” will be viewable on Friday, Dec. 18, beginning at 7:30 p.m. on the Schoharie Valley Singers YouTube channel. The Singers will perform three pieces of music, lasting about 15 minutes. The concert is free for the public to view. Donations are always welcome.

“With many professional, collegiate, and community choruses canceling their seasons amidst the pandemic, SVS decided to get creative! For the fall season, singers rehearsed individually in their homes and watched weekly rehearsals posted online,” wrote the singers’ president Robet Hot in a notice announcing the event.

Every four weeks or so, singers submitted a recording to the artistic director, Benjamin April. Those recordings were then compiled into one performance, sounding like all of the singers are singing together, in the same room.

“This endeavor was made possible through the dedication of the entire SVS community,” said Holt.

Details may be found on the organization’s website at www.schoharievalleysingers.org, and on Facebook @SchoharieValleySingers. Emails are always welcome at for those wishing for more information.

These programs are made possible, in part, with public funds from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, administered through the Community Arts Grant Fund in Schoharie County by the Greene County Council on the Arts.
