BETHLEHEM — A DNA hit has led police here to arrest a suspect in a two-year-old robbery.

This week, Bethlehem Police charged Anthony P. Malatesta, 51, with third-degree burglary and third-degree grand larceny, both felonies, for a burglary in February 2016 of a Delmar vehicle-repair shop where tools and equipment were stolen after forced entry, according to a release from the Bethlehem Police Department.

Malatesta is currently in custody of the New York State Department of Corrections, for previous unrelated burglary offenses, the release said.

When Bethlehem Police arrived at the repair shop on Feb. 28, 2016 to investigate the burglary that had happened the night before, they secured evidence for DNA analysis that was forwarded to the New York State Police Laboratory. Recently, the state lab found “a match of a known offender who was already on file with the DNA databank,” the release said.

Malatesta was remanded back to the custody of the Department of Corrections and is scheduled to return to Bethlehem Town Court on Dec. 18 at 4 p.m. The Bethlehem Police Department is continuing its investigation into this case and other burglaries that took place during that time period.
