Marinopoulos at RPI earns football awards

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute student-athlete George Marinopoulos of Slingerlands has earned a weekly football award from the Liberty League.

A freshman named the Rookie of the Week, Marinopoulos, a Guilderland graduate, was honored for the fourth time, and fourth consecutive week, after completing 21 of 36 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns at Wesley.

His first scoring strike was from 25 yards out to put RPI ahead, 17-10, in the second quarter and he later connected on an 11-yard touchdown in the third quarter to give RPI a 27-24 lead.

Marinopoulos, a business and management major who has been Rookie of the Week three times and named to the Weekly Honor Roll once, played in seven games. He completed 95 of 148 passes (64.2 percent) for 1,031 yards and 11 touchdowns and was intercepted five times.

He had an efficiency rating of 140.48 and a record of 5-1 as a starter, helping the Engineers to the Liberty League title and its automatic bid into the NCAA Playoffs.

Rensselaer, which is coached by Ralph Isernia, finished with an 8-3 record after playing in the NCAA Playoffs - RPI's fifth all-time appearance and first since 2007. The Engineers were 4-1 in the conference.
