Guilderland offers winter recreation

GUILDERLAND — The town’s Parks and Recreation Department is offering several programs for fall and winter.

Elementary students can play in the basketball program,  which takes place at the Farnsworth Middle School gym on Saturdays from Dec. 10 through Feb. 11.  It costs $60 per child.  The program for first- and second-graders runs from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The program for third-, fourth- and fifth-graders runs from 9:30  to 11 a.m.  Dana Doak is the head instructor for the basketball program.  Parent volunteers are needed to run the program.

Yoga 4 Teens will take place at the Farnsworth Middle School library for sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders from Nov. 18 to Dec. 23.  The yoga class takes place right after school and runs from 3:45 to 5 p.m.  The cost for Yoga 4 Teens is $60 and is taught by Christine Carpenter.

Winter Break Fun-n-Games takes place in the Guilderland Elementary School gym from Dec. 27 to 30 from 9 to 11 a.m. for kids in first through sixth grades.  Taught by Mike Schaffer and Steve Freeman, the program costs $55.

On Wednesday, Nov. 23, the Parks and Recreation office will host the Kids’ Thanksgiving and Fall Craft Workshop at 181 Route 146, with two sessions, from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 to 3 p.m.  The program is for students in kindergarten through fifth grade and the cost is $12 per child, for materials.  Advanced registration — by calling the office at (518)  456-3150 or going online at www.guilderlandrec.com — is required. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

In addition, hikers, runners and outdoor enthusiasts may use the trails running throughout Tawasentha Park, the Winter Recreation area, and the Community Gardens.  Trail maps are available at the Parks and Recreation office at 181 Route 146, across from Tawasentha Park, or online at www.townofguilderland.org.
