Learn about Henry Knox and his noble train of artillery

To the Editor:

Moments in history you may have missed: Henry Knox, who is he and what did he do?

Hear how this 25-year-old bookseller from Massachusetts orchestrated moving 60 tons of artillery over 300 miles in 56 days from Fort Ticonderoga to Dorchester Heights, Massachusetts by order of General George Washington.

Knox’s journey began on Dec. 5, 1775 when he arrived at Fort Ticonderoga. Over the course of five days, Continental soldiers, under the direction of Knox, began the work of bringing together, loading, and transporting 59 cannons, mortars, howitzers, and a bunch of gunflints and lead.

This 300-mile journey, known as the Knox Trail, is marked with 56 historical plaques commemorating the 56 days it took to complete the task assigned to him by Washington. The artillery arrived in Dorchester Heights on Jan. 25, 1776.

The Berne Historical Society invites you to experience “Henry Knox and His Noble Train of Artillery” presented by Donna Gwin, secretary of the Knox Historical Society and member of the Berne Historical Society.
