Reasons Why Hughes Should Be Elected.
BECAUSE as Governor of New York he has already proved that he dared to do the right thing, and is prepared to further do and dare when called into a wider field.
BECAUSE he is not a dreamer and not a quitter.
BECAUSE he is a red-blooded American. His policy will be “America first, America efficient.”
BECAUSE he will protect this country against being flooded with the cheap manufactures of Europe after the war.
BECAUSE a business man is going to be especially needed in the next few years. In consequence of the European war a tremendous readjustment of the world’s business is ahead. The United States must be economically prepared. It must not, as now, be left defenseless. It must not have a President with an untrained business mind, ever changing. Mr. Hughes made a remarkable record as a business Governor of New York.
Reasons Why Wilson Should Be Defeated.
BECAUSE Wilson’s text book statesmanship and grape-juice diplomacy have made the United States an international laughing stock.
BECAUSE he is incompetent to lead, and veers like a weather vane whenever a zephyr of public opinion seems to blow against him.
BECAUSE he is for free trade, direct taxes and an empty treasury — the same old Democratic trinity.
BECAUSE he lifted the embargo of arms so that the Mexican desperadoes have used American ammunition to murder American soldiers and civilians.
BECAUSE he has not reduced, as he promised, the high cost of living, but has actually made it higher.
BECAUSE he was pledged to a single term by the Baltimore convention, but before the type was cold he was building up his fences for another.
VOORHEESVILLE.
— At the special banquet of the Odd Fellows, Monday evening, a straw vote was cast. The result was 19 for Hughes and 7 for Wilson.
— Ground has been broken for the new Catholic church to be erected here. Rev. Michael J. McCaffrey, now in charge of the Altamont church, will also be in charge of this parish. The contract is let to Jacob Weaver of Altamont. It is expected the formal dedication may be by March 1.
— Will the two ladies from Voorheesville M. E. church who had some repairing of eye glasses done on Sept. 27 at John G. Myers’ store, communicate with Miss Emma A. Mitchell, Altamont, or John A. Becker, at Myers’ store?
NORTH THOMPSON’S LAKE.
Those who attended the meeting of the Ladies’ Aid society at the home of Mrs. Lansing Finch enjoyed an auto trip. All reported a good time.
GUILDERLAND CENTER.
Miss Nellie Van Vorst gave her scholars a Hallowe’en party at the school house Monday afternoon.
VILLAGE NOTES.
— A guard has been erected about hydrant 23, corner of Maple and Western avenues. It is a commendable piece of work, as the hydrant stood in a dangerous position.
— Owing to the scarcity of rain the supply of water in the village reservoirs is greatly diminished. Water patrons should be as careful as possible in the use of water. Should no rain fall soon it may become necessary to conserve the remaining water for fire purposes only.
New York State Woman Suffrage Party Prize Contests.
Two prize contests are to be offered to women of New York. The first will be given for the best article on “Why the rural woman needs the vote.” The second will be given for the best reason “Why churches should help women to get the vote.”
Both of these articles must be inside 250 words. They must be written by women themselves and based on reasons known to their own experience. They should be expressed in simple words. Not literature, but life, is desired in these articles.
