Gotti’s story wins second place

BETHLEHEM — Richard Gotti of Delmar won second place and $75 in the Hudson Valley Writers’ Guild 2016 Short Fiction Contest for his short story, “The Master Bedroom.”

First place and $100 went to Mary Cuffe Perez of Galway for her story, “Necessity,” and third place and $50 went to Deyva Arthur of Troy for “Inviting Mabel to Dinner.”

There were also three Honorable Mentions: “Blood in the Soil” by Derek Rose of Mechanicville, “The Haunting Season” by Laurie Treacy of Wappingers Falls, and “The Wolf, the Girl, and the Flat Tire” by Judy Cid of Middleburgh.

Thirty-four writers, mostly from upstate New York, submitted 38 pieces of short fiction that were read and judged by HVWG board members Julie Lomoe, Joe Krausman, and Andrea Portnick.  The contest was open to all writers living in New York State; membership in the guild was not required.

Winners of the contest will be invited to read at the guild’s annual meeting on Nov. 13 at the William K. Sanford Town Library, 629 Albany Shaker Road, Colonie.  The meeting, which will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., is free and open to the public.
