There is no lack of transparency, only a lack of interest

Editor’s note: Since there will not be another edition before Election Day, The Enterprise offered Adam Greenberg a chance to respond to Jess Sardella’s letter in today’s edition.

To the Editor:

By ending her letter with a call for transparency, “In accordance with Public Officers Law PBO § 84 et seq.,” Ms. Sardella insinuates that the current town board of New Scotland has not been transparent. Nothing could be further from the truth. She wants us to “make all environmental assessments, safety analyses, and communications regarding BESS projects available to the public before any approvals are granted?”

That’s exactly what we do with every project and agenda item. Our website lists all of this information. There is no lack of transparency, only, at best, a lack of interest — at least until election time.

Ms. Sardella further tries to confuse readers (and voters) by implying that two years ago, we passed a law to make BESS storage systems easier to site in town. That is the opposite of what happened. Had we done nothing, these systems could have been placed anywhere; there were no restrictions in place.

We passed a law that, among many other restrictions, required these to be sited on a minimum of 7 acres, protecting neighboring parcels. So, although Ms. Sbardella continues to imply (without evidence) that passing that law in 2023 is somehow shadily related to my 2025 contract to site BESS on my property, the law made it harder to bring BESS to town, not easier.

Speaking of getting it backwards — or pretending to — does Ms. Sardella really think it’s a bad thing that no one has brought a complaint to the ethics board in the last five years? What is she trying to imply by bringing up my recently deceased father, who was a 30-year member of the State Board of Medical Conduct and one of the most ethical people I have had the privilege to know?

One last point. The town board is working hard to keep our residents’ costs down. Though Ms. Sardella doesn’t seem to think staying under the tax cap and keeping costs under control is vital, I certainly do.

Our energy costs are a big part of that equation. These systems upgrade our grid, bring costs down, allow green-energy sources to be more efficient, and vastly lower the occurrence of brown and blackouts. And, with proper regulations in place, they are safe.

Voters of this town, you have a choice to make. You can believe that the MAGA Republicans running in New Scotland have your environmental and financial interests at heart, or you can vote for the people who have proven over the past decade that they are worthy of your trust.
