America’s pastime is alive and well in New Scotland

To the Editor:

In these times, folks seldom take time to recognize positive service and support and say thank you but one is due to the New Scotland Town Board members.

It's called America's pastime but baseball continues to have a low profile and slow growth in the town of New Scotland and village of Voorheesville. In 2011, an idea was born to create a competitive greater-New Scotland community-based youth travel baseball program.

In 2012, the idea took shape and, similar to Major League Baseball clubs, the Voorheesville Baseball Club took its name after its home municipality.

Since that time, the town of New Scotland has quietly shown its support for the program and youth in the area by inviting it to play at the existing diamond at the Swift Road Park and then supporting the club’s expansion to younger ages by considering the development of a baseball diamond for younger teams and most recently committing to converting an existing softball field to a baseball field that would allow several different younger-age teams to play baseball together in their local community.

Softball will not be displaced with this support, as a softball field will continue to be available.

The support of the current town board has been invaluable to the youth involved in the program and to the larger community and it demonstrates a positive commitment to the future of the community.

In this age of pressing and important issues, it is a pleasure to see some elected officials not losing sight of one of our most important resources — our youth. On behalf of the youth involved, the club would tip its hat to the current town board members and say thank you for it's support of the club and the youth of the community.
