Felony arrest follows scam attempt
BETHLEHEM — Two Albany men were charged with a felony on Tuesday evening, Oct. 28, after, police say, they tried to scam a Glenmont resident.
Bailey C. Martinez, 24, and Deamonte E. Brown, 25, were charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, and sixth-degree conspiracy, a misdemeanor.
A release from the Bethlehem Police Department says events unfolded this way.
Someone claiming to be an investigator with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) called the Glenmont resident, saying their bank account had been compromised and that an “investigator” would come to retrieve their debit card. The victim was told to place the debit card inside an envelope, leave it in the mailbox at the residence, and a white sport utility vehicle would come pick up the card.
Bethlehem Police officers, monitoring the situation, saw the white SUV arrive at the residence and retrieve the envelope. The SUV was then stopped and both Martinez and Brown were taken into custody.
They were arraigned in Bethlehem Town Court and released under the supervision of Albany County Probation. A return date was set for Nov. 18.
Bethlehem Police urge anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a similar scam to contact the department at 518-439-9973.
