Guilderland needs adequate housing for seniors

To the Editor:

Anyone who knows me is aware of how much I love the town of Guilderland and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Many people may also recall that I served as our town's director of senior services from 2001 to 2013. In that capacity, I often heard from seniors that they had a strong desire to stay in Guilderland after deciding to sell their house and move to an apartment. Therefore, we need to provide adequate housing to accommodate our growing senior population.

In the April 4, 2019 issue of this newspaper, an article about baby boomers stated, “According to figures from the Capital Region Planning Commission, the number of people in Guilderland aged 75 and above is expected to grow from 1,940 in 2010 to over 2,384 in 2020 and over the next 20 years, through 2040, nearly double, rising to 4,398. People aged 65 to74 are expected to increase in number sharply from 2010 to 2020, from 2,414 to 4,242.”

That’s why I support the apartments that have recently been built and am especially in favor of the apartments planned near Crossgates Mall. That location would allow residents to walk to the mall stores as well as other businesses in that area, and remain actively connected to our wonderful community.
