Concerned with Stage Road safety

To the Editor:

I have concerns with our town of Berne.

When the argument started about Stage Road in East Berne, why was it not investigated by Supervisor Kevin Crosier and the town attorney? Because Highway Superintendent Randy Bashwinger said the road was not safe for plowing at the intersection of Stage Road and Route 443, stating site and braking distances.

For safety, it should have been investigated by Mr. Crosier and the attorney. How come they didn’t investigate to see if Mr. Bashwinger is right? You just don’t leave it when it comes to safety.

Now Joel Willsey wants Stage Road left open. Now all his experience with the State’s Department of Transportation should tell him Mr. Bashwinger is right, or Mr. Willsey is not concerned for safety. While we are on the subject of safety, how come the whole town board did not holler for safety’s sake.

Some years ago, when I visited Pat Stemple, I came out Stage Road — and this was in good weather — a car came out of nowhere on Route 443. He would not be able to stop in time.

If it were up to me, I would shave the hill on Route 443 and fill in that end of State Road.

Editor’s note: Kevin Crosier and Randy Bashwinger are running for re-election. Joel Willsey is running for Berne councilman.
