Glyphosate and well-water safety

To the Editor:
Families are temporarily rejoicing on East Lydius Street and Siver Road, recently learning that management of invasive plants in our neighborhood has been paused.

The powerful herbicide glyphosate was scheduled to be used on Pine Bush Preserve land just across our streets even though everyone is dependent on shallow home wells.

It was discovered that New York state recently passed an environmental law prohibiting glyphosate use on state property (Subdivision 12 of Section 33-1301 of the Environmental Conservation Law).

An exception was created to use glyphosate to manage invasive plants provided there will be no actual or significant threat of direct human exposure. We hope good judgment prevails.

Mechanical means to remove plants is more laborious but much safer for our young children.
