World War I comes to life in period photographs
NEW SCOTLAND — To honor the 100th anniversary, Robert E. Mulligan Jr. will recall the sights, places, and events experienced by soldiers from New York State.
His presentation, “Sammy Doughboy Remembers,” draws on images from the New York Times rotogravure section. The images, published every Wednesday, record the entire history of the war, at home and overseas, dealing with the United States and the other combatant nations.
The Clarksville Historical society presentation will take place on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Clarksville Community Church on Delaware Turnpike in Clarksville.
Mulligan retired after a quarter century as curator of Military History at the New York State Museum in Albany. He has reenacted as a World War I doughboy, has visited some of the European sites, and owns a considerable library of books on the war.
As part of Mulligan’s project, he asks that anyone who has photographs of ancestors who were World War I soldiers to bring them on Oct. 5, and either prior to or following his presentation he will take photographs of the pictures and any documentation you may have relating to their service.
