Scouts converge at Altamont fairgrounds for camporee
ALTAMONT — Hundreds of Scouts and adult Scout leaders will converge at the Altamont fairgrounds on Saturday, Sept. 29, for the Twin Rivers Council Fall Camporee.
The event will bring together Cub Scouts, Scouts, and Venturers for the council’s biggest event of the year. Twin Rivers Council provides Scouting in the Capital Region, the eastern Adirondacks, and the eastern Mohawk Valley.
The event begins on Friday, Sept. 28, when Scouting units will arrive. Scouts will leave on Sunday morning, Sept. 30. Scouts will be camping at the fairgrounds.
Scouts will be taking part in a number of activities throughout the day on Saturday, Sept. 29, including playing carnival games, in a bounce house, and on a Velcro wall; shooting at indoor archery and BB-gun ranges; visiting fairgrounds museums; getting instruction for merit badges; seeing law-enforcement demonstrations; wrestling with inflatable sumo suits; seeing cooking demonstrations; and watching a nighttime fireworks show.
The Scouts will also be participating in an online scavenger hunt game called Goosechase, which allows them to use smartphones to record participating in or visiting the events or places the scavenger-hunt games require.
Cub Scouting is available to boys and girls ages 6 to 10. It focuses on kids and their parents learning new things together and working as a group.
Scouting is currently for boys ages 10 to 18, and focuses on camping and outdoor activities although girls will be able to participate in Scouting beginning in 2019.
Venturing is a co-ed program for young men and women ages 14 to 21.
