Hunger in America solved

To the Editor:

It is hard sometimes to quantify in the landslide of disinformation, rollbacks, and general chaos of the Trump administration the impact of policies and laws that they have enacted.

But on one issue, hunger in America, we need not worry any longer. After the “Big Beautiful Bill” cut $187 billion from food stamps over the next 10 years, the United States Department of Agriculture has just announced it will no longer measure the number of families who are living with food insecurity.

Being food insecure means that, during some portion of the year, not every member of a household has access to enough food for a healthy lifestyle.

For the record, that number in 2023 was 13.5 percent of families, impacting one way or another, 47 million of our fellow citizens. Fortunately however, thanks to the USDA’s new policy that it is better to be ignorant of a problem than solve a problem, we can all agree, “Problem? What problem?”
