Schaller to speak about pioneer surveyor Colvin

In 1890, surveying was an arduous task, and Verplanck Colvin was a pioneer.

CLARKSVILLE — On Oct. 2, Jim Schaller will speak about pioneer surveyor Verplanck Colvin, hosted by the Clarksville Historical Society at 7 p.m. at the Clarksville Community Church.

Schaller is a member of  the “Colvin Crew,” a group formed many years ago to “perpetuate the doings and dreams of that pioneer surveyor — Verplanck Colvin.” One of the activities of the “Crew” is to seek out Colvin’s “Survey Bolts” on mountain tops, lake shores, and elsewhere in the Adirondacks.

Schaller’s program will be about Colvin’s family history, which goes back to 1635, and about his work and connections in the Hudson Valley, the Helderbergs, and the Capital District. Besides surveying, Colvin had many other interests such as travel, writing, artistry, and politics.

All Clarksville Historical society programs are open to the public. Refreshments will be served following the program. The church is located at 1997 Delaware Turnpike in Clarksville. For more information, call 768-2870.
