THREE BIG DAYS
FOR BI-COUNTY FAIR
From all over two counties they came by the thousands this week to the Albany-Schenectady County fair, which by leaps and bounds is after the “second to none” banner in the county fairs of this state.
The exhibits in point of quality and quantity, except in a few instances, have exceeded the displays of last year. The races have had good fields and, although no wonderful records were made, each day had its contests that narrowed down to two horses for first and second place.
The Albany County Health committee, the Albany County Red Cross and the Schenectady County Public Health nursing association combined forces in presenting their exhibition on children’s health.
“Peppy Polly and Sickish Sue,” a playlet devised to teach health habits, was presented hourly in connection with the exhibit, in a building at the right of the main entrance. Offered principally for the children, it drew large crowds of adults. The “health fortune teller” in the same building measured and inspected the children, advised their parents and amused the youngsters.
The poultry exhibit this year was “bigger and better.” To the usual number of entries were indeed the flock and utility classes. Many ducks were on exhibition, and turkeys as well. There were 13 car loads of poultry, exclusive of local exhibits.
The Market Gardeners of Albany and Schenectady competed in a great showing of fruits and vegetables, well displayed. Schenectady won the $50 prize offered by the Fair association, by 82 to 75 points.
Hiawatha Grange of Dormansville carried off the honors of first place among granges, by a most unique arrangement of its booth. It was made to represent a dining room with walls composed of corn stalks. A framed painting hung on the wall made of fruits and vegetables. Plates, knives and forks were made of kernels of corn.
GUILDERLAND CENTER
Mrs. Witherwax has made a fine beginning in her school. We are grateful to hear that time is given each morning for the reading of a portion from God’s Word. A splendid start for the day’s work.
KNOX
There was a large crowd out at the ball game which was played here on Saturday afternoon between the Medusa and Knox teams. Knox won both games, and is now tied with Clarksville for the leadership of the Helderberg league. The tie will be played off in a series of three games, the first contest to be staged at Knox on Saturday, Sept. 23.
RAVENA
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Carkner wish to thank their neighbors and friends, also the playmates of their little daughter, Laura, while confined in the hospital, for the beautiful flowers and other kind deeds shown toward her to make her little heart light and happy through all her suffering and pain.
VILLAGE NOTES
Karl Sand suffered a fracture of two bones in his right wrist last Saturday, while attempting to crank a Ford car belonging to Pangburn’s market.
WESTERLO
The drama, “Safety First,” which was to have been given at this place on Sept. 30th, has been postponed indefinitely.
