Crash on Route 9W sends one driver to hospital

SELKIRK — A 77-year-old man had to be extricated from his SUV on Thursday after, police say, he sideswiped a pickup truck towing a trailer filled with construction equipment.

At 11:08 a.m., Bethlehem Police responded to the crash on Route 9W and Tremay Lane in Selkirk.

Edgar A. Deutsch of Glenmont was driving south in a 2018 Ford Edge when it sideswiped a northbound 2016 Chevrolet pickup truck, with a trailer, driven by Frances D. Maxwell, 33, of Wynantskill, according to a release from the Bethlehem Police.

The police said on Friday, “At this point excessive speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.”

After Deutsch was extricated by the Selkirk Fire Department, he was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital by the Delmar-Bethlehem EMS and Albany County Paramedics.

Deutsch had multiple injuries and was listed in serious but stable condition on Friday, the release said; Maxwell was uninjured in the crash.

The crash closed Route 9W until 2:30 p.m., as Bethlehem Police conducted a crash reconstruction of the scene and interviewed witnesses. The crash is still under investigation and police are requesting that any witnesses call 518-439-9973.
