To the Editor:

Thunderstorms and downpours couldn’t dampen the spirit of the Helderberg Family and Community Organization volunteers and their community supporters during their Barbecue and Food Drive held in late August. Nearly 300 delicious meals, prepared by Barbecue Delights of Schoharie, were served on a stormy Sunday afternoon.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the community members who braved the elements to support our fundraiser. We also would like to thank the Knox Volunteer Fire Company for the use of its facilities and its continued support of our organization.

In addition to the funds raised to support the programs offered by the HFCO, over 360 food and non-food items were donated by the generous residents of the Hilltowns. These items were sorted, boxed, and delivered by Emma Cyr, Natalie Elble, Ashlynn Hanley, Sara Macrina, Abby and Madison Pasquini, Bridget McDermott, and Lucy Rappaport. Our teenage volunteers delivered the boxes to the Community Storehouse and to the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School District Food Pantry on Sept. 7.

The Community Storehouse is housed in the Rock Road Chapel at 96 Rock Road in Knox. The Community Storehouse is open on Wednesday mornings from 7 to 9 a.m. (a free breakfast is served) and on Saturday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m. Individuals and families are not required to provide any financial information and there are no limits placed on requests for assistance.

The Community Storehouse also provides support for families and individuals during the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter holidays.

The Helderberg Family and Community Organization is proud to join the Knox Reformed Church, Knox Volunteer Fire Company, Berne Reformed Church, Berne Volunteer fire Company, Helderberg Christian School, BKW student groups, and the Masonic Lodge in supporting the Community Storehouse.

The Community Storehouse’s mission is to simply serve those in need. It relies on the generosity of the community and the spirit of volunteerism to help meet the needs of its neighbors. Please contact Pastor Martha Davis at 518-221-2479 for assistance, to volunteer, and/or to donate food and non-food items.
