Thacher Park Road to close for culvert work

NEW SCOTLAND — Route 157 near the Thacher Park Visitor Center and the Paint Mine Picnic Area in New Scotland will be closed from Sept. 10 until Nov. 27 as the New York State Department of Transportation replaces two culverts under the state road.

Access to the park and visitors’ center will remain open. When headed to the park and surrounding area on route 85 or 146 and additional routes, motorists should watch for signs and follow the posted detour.

Additionally, all homes and businesses in the area will continue to be accessible during construction, and trash collection, local deliveries, and other services in the area will continue to be provided, according to a release from the DOT.

During the closure, motorists are advised to seek an alternate route. The posted detour — selected to accommodate large trucks — involves route 157, 85, and 85A through Voorheesville, Route 156 through Altamont, and back to Route 157.

“It is imperative that motorists remember to drive carefully in work zones, for their own safety and the safety of workers,” the release states.

Fines for speeding in a work zone are doubled. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
