Please return historical marker

To the Editor:

In the spring of 2016, the New Scotland Historical Association erected a historical marker honoring Civil War veteran Captain Henry Crounse, using grant money from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation. The marker was unveiled with much fanfare at the Crounse house on Picard Road, just north of Helderledge Farm.

Unfortunately, sometime between Christmas 2017 and Jan. 6, 2018, a vehicle hit and dislodged the historical marker. At the time of the accident/incident, no police report was filed. Some small shards were subsequently found and we were hopeful that the marker was thrown into a nearby marsh and could be recovered in the summer.

However, the marker has not been found to date and we believe somebody may have walked off with it.

Historical markers are expensive to fabricate and we believe that, if the marker is found and returned to NSHA, we could have it repaired and reinstalled. We request that you email NSHA at if you have any information about the marker or the accident that destroyed it.

If you have the marker or pieces of it, we would be grateful if you returned it with no questions asked. If anonymity is important to you, just drop off the marker at the Wyman Osterhout Community Center, 7 The Old Rd, Voorheesville, NY 12186.

Thank you in advance for your help.

NSHA President
