Depot Lane Singers start rehearsals for December concerts
SCHOHARIE — The Depot Lane Singers, in its 39th year, begins rehearsals for winter concert programs on Tuesday, Sept. 5, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
New singers are welcome; rehearsals take place at the Depot Lane Theatre building in Schoharie. Students who are in ninth grade or above are also invited to sing. Although there are no auditions and experience is not required, the chorus sings in harmonies that can include up to eight separate parts. Practice CDs are provided to help singers learn the music.
“Do You Hear What I Hear?” will be the theme for this year’s presentation. Once again, a varied program has been selected featuring familiar carols as “Good Christian Men Rejoice,” “Silent Night,” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.”
Selections will also include songs not usually not heard over mainstream media as well as the title song of the concert: “Do You Hear What I Hear?” The concert will be accompanied by a professional string quintet.
Concerts are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 1, at the Duanesburg Reformed Presbyterian Church, and for Saturday, Dec. 2, at Schoharie High School. Both concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m.
The Depot Lane Singers is a community chorus of 60 to 70 members based in Schoharie with singers from Albany, Montgomery, Otsego, Rensselaer, Schenectady and Schoharie counties. The late Frances B. Tripp organized the group in September 1979 after her retirement from teaching at Schoharie High School. Mitch Haverly is the artistic director and conductor; Associate Director Benjamin April accompanies the Depot Lane Singers on the piano.
The Schoharie Colonial Heritage Association sponsors the group, and a portion of the proceeds from its programs are given to the association.
