League helps with voter registration in jails, sticker contest

These are among the eight designs for “I Voted” stickers that Albany County residents can vote on by Sept. 6. The winning design will be printed on stickers to be given to voters on Election Day.

ALBANY COUNTY — The League of Women Voters of Albany County is part of a coalition that is working to register voters in Capital Region jails.

Volunteers are being trained online to register eligible detainees; no experience is required.

Training times are Sept. 13 at 7 p.m., Sept. 27 at noon, and Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.

Once trained, volunteers choose their schedules to conduct education and registration sessions in county jails.

“All voters count in a multicultural and multiracial democracy,” says a flier promoting the initiative.

For more information, email Regina Tillman, the league’s coalition coordinator, at rmt370@gmail.com.

The league also worked with the Albany County Legislature in sponsoring a contest for area schoolchildren to create artwork for “I Voted” stickers. Judges selected, from among hundreds of entrants, eight candidates, which are currently displayed on the county’s website.

Anyone can go online to vote, by Sept. 6, for a design. The winning design will be printed on stickers that are given to voters on Election Day.
