Two UAlbany dorms to get $24.5 million green renovation
GUILDERLAND — Work has begun on a renovation of two dormitories in the Dutch Quad at the University at Albany — Beverwyck and Schuyler Halls — that will allow them to house 171 students and that will include a wellness center, which was formerly off-campus, said a spokesman for the state’s Dormitory Authority, David Perritano.
The project is part of more than $73 million in capital projects that the authority is launching for renovations on state university campuses, Perritano said.
The UAlbany renovation is being financed through the Dormitory Authority’s SUNY Dormitory Facilities Program, Perritano said, explaining that this program issues low-cost, tax-exempt bonds supported by student residence-hall fees. Construction on the two dorms is scheduled for completion in July 2019.
The project will be constructed to LEED-Gold standards under the sustainability and energy efficiency guidelines of the United States Green Building Council, Perritano said. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
Energy-efficient elements in the design, he said, will include:
— A tankless water-heating system, which provides an endless supply of hot water while saving space and reducing energy costs;
— A high-efficiency heating system;
— Energy-saving light-emitting diode, or LED, lighting in hallways and student rooms;
— Bathrooms equipped with water-efficient fixtures to reduce indoor water usage; and
— An upgraded ventilation system using energy-recovery technology.
To date, 42 Dormitory Authority projects have received a rating of LEED-Certified or better, the spokesman said.
The wellness center offers health services and counseling, said Jordan Carleo-Evangelist, a spokesman for UAlbany. It is currently located off of the campus on Patroon Creek Boulevard, he said, and students get to it on a shuttle bus, so this change will make health care more easily accessible for students.
A student success center and a vending café will be incorporated into the first-floor space between the two residence halls, Perritano said. Carleo-Evangelist said that the center offers academic support and advisement services.
Beverwyck and Schuyler Halls will be the first residence halls in Dutch Quad to have air-conditioning.
