Little more than Trump lickspittle cultists

To the Editor:
The article in last week’s Altamont Enterprise “GOP pols blast lowering threshold for farm workers’ overtime pay” was so sad.  How could intelligent members of the agriculture community such as Mr. [Timothy] Stanton and Mr. [Peter] Ten Eyck allow themselves to be duped by the Republican pols? The headliners in this event were Congressman Lee Zeldin and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik.

Mr. Zeldin and Ms. Stefanik’s recent claim to fame is that they voted to overturn the election of President Joseph Biden on Jan. 6. Ah yes, Jan. 6. Neither Mr. Zeldin nor Ms. Stefanik has condemned the riotous behavior of the Trump-inspired mob.

The Republican National Committee declared that the Jan. 6 activities were “legitimate political discourse.” Not a word of denial of this position came from Mr. Zeldin and Ms. Stefanik. Their hero, Mr. Trump, is now having to deal with possible violations of the Espionage Act. In short, Mr. Zeldin and Ms. Stefanik are little more than Trump lickspittle cultists.

Regarding the issue of farm workers’ overtime pay, there are obviously areas of contention. The suggestion by the Farm Laborers Wage Board to gradually lower the overtime threshold seems reasonable.

But to allow yourselves to become dupes of the GOP leadership and the two mentioned discredited congress people does not advance your cause one bit. You need to choose your “friends” much more carefully.

Editor’s note: On Jan. 6, 2021, Elise Stefanik and Lee Zeldin were both among the 147 Republicans to vote against certifying Joe Biden’s electoral votes from at least one state.
