Not the time to be lenient on violent crimes

To the Editor:

I urge our governor to reconsider his decision to legalize recreational marijuana [Enterprise editorial, Aug. 9, 2018, “Mary Jane has gotten a bad reputation. She’s really not that kind of girl.”], and to end the death penalty.

Colorado law enforcement and Colorado emergency medical doctors have written that crime is up, accidents are up, addiction is a problem and babies born to mothers smoking pot have more severe health issues.

More law-enforcement officers are being murdered in the United States than ever before. A child was mugged in Gloversville; a woman was brutally beaten in Schenectady, into unconsciousness with a fractured skull, by two female gang members.

When human beings choose to kill and hurt another, they need to take responsibility for their actions. The death penalty used to be a deterrent for cop killers and kidnappers.

This is not the time to be lenient on violent crimes.
