Richard finishes Fox Creek 5K in less than 16 minutes

Feeling the heat from the sun and some competitors, Shea Foley from Slingerlands finishes first overall for women with a time of 21 minutes and 14 seconds, twelve seconds ahead of the next woman to cross the finish line.

BERNE — Move over, American Pharaoh. Local runners are now racing for their own triple crown.

The first race, the Kentucky Derby of the trilogy, was held Saturday in Berne — the Fox Creek 5K. The town’s supervisor, Kevin Crosier, raised a rifle to fire the starting shot into the crisp, clear air. Over 100 competitors were off and running.

David Richards of Cobleskill, who was in the lead group the entire route, crossed the finish line first in 15 minutes, 49 seconds. Richards was more than three minutes ahead of the second-place finisher, Noah Valvo of Delanson, at 19:03. Lukus Becker of Berne was on Valvo’s heels, finishing in 19:20.

The first-place woman was Shea Foley of Slingerlands, at 21:14. The second-place female finisher was Susy Garcia Romero of Rensselaer, at 21:26; third was Dana Peterson of Voorheesville, at 21:31.

The Preakness — second on the road to the triple crown — will be held on Aug. 18 in New Scotland, followed the next day by the Belmont equivalent in Altamont.
