Food pantry urges gardeners to donate surplus produce

To the Editor:

The Northeast has winters that drag on forever!

I start looking forward to fresh fruits and vegetables from the garden in early March. When the garden is ready to pick, we are treated to a variety of tastes that hold great nutrition that for eight months we are sorely lacking.

As I drive through Guilderland, I noticed that there are so many people now who are planting and harvesting gardens for a hobby. I began thinking how wonderful it would be if each person who has a garden shared just a few items with those who are hungry here in Guilderland.

People who cannot afford food often eat canned foods that lack the vitamins and minerals that are so important for their health.

If you are one of those talented gardeners who plants and wonders how you will eat all that your garden produces, consider donating it to the Guilderland Food Pantry. We would love to take some of that food off your hands!

Give us a call and we will even come and pick it up. We are also open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. We are located at Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church, 2291 Western Ave., Guilderland 12084.  Our phone number is (518) 930-1001. Thank you.
