Town officials don’t make us conserve water until it’s almost gone!

To the Editor:
We, the gardeners of native plants and scruffy lawns, must go on the offensive against those who think it’s 1950, there is no looming climate disaster, and we must all have a nice lawn so as to “not disgrace the neighborhood.”

As I watch my neighbor’s new sprinkler system deliver hundreds of gallons of water to his new lawn it occurs to me we may wish we had that water to drink in the near future. The blistering hot temperatures are drying up the water and turning yards to deserts.

The number-one irrigated crop in the United States is the lawn and the lawn does nothing for anyone. Our pollinator gardens are not only saving essential insects but essential water as well.

Town officials don’t make us conserve water until it’s almost gone! As our area sadly gets hotter and drier, it’s time to demand the end of the lawn because we may need that water to drink sooner than we think.
