Altamont Fair celebrates 125 years

To the Editor:

The Altamont Fair will be continuing its long tradition of providing family-friendly entertainment and of showcasing agriculture and history, Aug. 15 to 20. This year, we are celebrating 125 years!

On Aug. 6, 1892, a group of residents met to discuss the feasibility of creating an agricultural fair in the community — an organization was born! The 125th Celebration Committee, led by Beverly Filkins, has been hard at work, creating new exhibits to share our history.

A commemorative poster has been created to illustrate some of the favorite early photos of the fair. Come listen to a great lineup of speakers and demonstrators in the Dutch Barn ready to share some great insights about the early days. We are excited to be a part of the early history of our community and we look forward to showcasing our history and our agricultural roots.

Amy Anderson, fair manager, describes plans for a special tribute to veterans. “On Wednesday, Aug. 16, we are inviting veterans from all the eras to participate in ‘Blending the Veterans’ created by Cindy Pollard. A meet and greet with veterans will be held in the Dutch Barn after the 2 p.m. ceremony. There, you can meet with veterans from World War II as well as other wars. The fair is partnering with the American Legion Post 977 to show the colors and escort our honored guests.”

Amy goes on to say, “New this year, we are having the ‘Nerger’s Tigers,’ featuring rare white tigers, and Dynamo Dogs. We also have ‘World of Wonders’ that features a sword swallower, fire eater, and some wonderful old-time jokes!  Returning is Michael DeSchalit, Master Hypnotist, who will also perform with his show ‘Magically Speaking.’”

Amy continues, “We have expanded our Agricultural Trail and Hands-on Farming exhibit designed to educate and entertain. The Baby Animal exhibit is returning to give our smaller patrons an opportunity to see the little ones up close. Clayhaven Farm’s Belgians are returning to stay all week.

“In addition, we will have a full schedule of livestock shows — sheep, goats, rabbits, poultry, and dairy and beef cattle. Plus we have a full week of pony and horse shows.”

One-price admission includes unlimited rides, attractions, Circus Hollywood under the big top, and parking. Admission is $15 at the gate on Tuesday and Wednesday, and $17 at the gate Thursday through Sunday. Wednesday is Senior and Military Day — seniors 65 years and up along with members of the United States Armed Forces are admitted free until 4 p.m., including rides! Save money by purchasing your tickets online for only $15 online at www.altamontfair.com ; you can use the ticket any day of the fair.
