Caucus was an excellent exercise in participatory democracy

To the Editor:

Last Thursday’s Democratic caucus at Tawasentha Park was a little long, and a little testy at the outset, but in the end it was an excellent exercise in participatory democracy. I think that 285 voting attendees was clear evidence of that.

While I’m appreciative of everyone who worked to help this event go off successfully, I would like to single out the work done by Greg Wier, who is the current highway superintendent, and who was designated as the Democratic candidate to run for the post in November. Greg is clearly not a “political type.”

When I arrived at the event, he was helping to control traffic and get cars safely parked. Later on, I observed him checking the designated voting area to see that it was properly marked off. At the end of the evening, after his nomination was secured, you didn’t see Greg hobnobbing with the political folks.

Instead, he was helping to rearrange picnic tables at the park pavilion so that everything would be in good order for the town’s day camp program to run smoothly the next morning. This is the kind of focus on getting it done is great to see in someone in public service, and I'd like to thank Greg for his efforts and wish him every success in November!
