High school athletes today
These local students have excelled on their college teams:
— Sarah Webber, Guilderland Class of 2016, a dean’s-list student at Niagara University, was recognized for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for Women's Swimming. She is also the head coach at Albany Country Club for its swim team, the Piranhas, which in 2018 won its first league championship in over 25 years under Webber’s guidance;
— Samuel Yakubowski and Aaron Carrk, both of Delmar, are members of the men’s volleyball team at the State University of New York at New Paltz, national champions for the second time in four years. The team was named Division III national champion, after taking down University of California Santa Cruz in the tournament finals on April 27;
— Emma Cremo of Delmar competed on the 2019 State University of New York College at Oneonta women’s lacrosse team, which finished 9-7-1 overall this season and went 5-3 in the SUNYAC conference and qualified for the SUNYAC tournament.
Cremo played in all 18 games for the Red Dragons this spring. The senior led the team with 20 caused turnovers and 29 ground balls;
— Mike Graves of Bethlehem competed on the 2019 SUNY Oneonta baseball team, which finished with an overall record of 18-20 and 6-12 in the SUNYAC this season. Oneonta qualified for the SUNYAC Tournament for the first time since 2014.
Graves batted .255 this season with 27 hits while going 12-for-14 in stolen base attempts;
— Brooke Corbett of Bethlehem competed on the 2019 SUNY Oneonta softball team during the recently completed spring season. The team finished with an overall record of 16-21-1 and 11-7 in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons finished fourth in the conference
Corbett started all 38 games for the Red Dragons this spring. The junior batted .294 with 30 hits including nine doubles and 14 RBI and 19 runs scored;
— Madeline Carswell of Albany competed on the SUNY Oneonta women’s tennis team during the 2018-19 year. The women's tennis team finished 2018-19 with an overall record of 16-8. During the fall season, the Red Dragons advanced to the SUNYAC championship match for the first time in program history.
Carswell cracked the starting lineup as a rookie in the number-6 singles and number-3 doubles spot. She compiled an overall record of 10-8 in singles and 16-5 in doubles for the year. Carswell was selected to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team at third doubles;
— Jennifer Vandervort of Voorheesville, a student at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts, won The Ray Cherenzia ’73 Unsung Hero Award for Women’s Swimming and Diving. and
The award is presented to a member of each varsity team who exemplifies the spirit of an “Unsung Hero” — who works hard every day, puts the team first over his or her personal goals, who does the little things without much recognition, yet is vital to their team’s success in competition, in the classroom, and in the community.
