DUANE.

When Mrs. William O. Becker with her children returned from an auto ride last Friday night, she discovered that her house was on fire. She alarmed the neighbors, who responded promptly and saved the house but not before considerable damage was done. A bank book and a pocketbook containing $26 hidden in a bed were thought to have been burned until Saturday morning, when the empty pocket book and a handful of matches were found along the road several hundred yards away. It is thought that some one entered the house and after securing the money and bank book set fire to three beds in three separate rooms. Two of the beds were almost entirely destroyed.

VOORHEESVILLE WATER CASE
DECIDED AGAINST VILLAGE

Judge Nichols has just handed down a decision in the injunction motion brought by Oscar B. Vunck against Frank Bloomingdale, et al., as trustees and water commissioners of the village of Voorheesville. The decision is in favor of the plaintiff, Mr. Vunck, and against the village.

In December 1920, the defendants shut off the plaintiff’s supply of water to his feed and grist mill which he operated in said village. Thereupon Mr. Vunck, through his attorney, J. Harris Loucks, obtained an injunction against the village, restraining it from shutting off his supply. The action was tried at the May term of the Supreme Court, this county, and occupied eight full days, the action being bitterly contested on both sides.

The decision holds that Mr. Vunck is entitled to use the village water in his mill whenever the pump is in operation, and also is entitled to use the water whenever there is water in the upper reservoir and also when the water in the lower reservoir is not less than three feet deep.

VILLAGE NOTES.
— A. J. Manchester and his helpers have been making some changes in the water mains on Helderberg avenue at its intersection with the new state road, by the removal of a fire hydrant to a point about thirty feet farther west. At the time the waterworks system was put down this hydrant was purposely placed there so that it would be convenient in case of fire occurring near that point. It was never dreamed that the location would in time be in the middle of a state highway.
