Closed post office in Alplaus is missed

To the Editor:
In his story, “East Berne Post Office potholes to be fixed soon” in the July 14 Altamont Enterprise, Noah Zweifel wrote, “In addition to the practical benefits, a recent CBS News report that focused on the connection residents of Alplaus, in Schenectady County, have to their post office found that some residents saw it as a place to catch up with their neighbors, as one might as they stop for gas or stroll up and down the aisles of a grocery store.”

The Alplaus, New York post office was closed by the Postal Service in 2012. All services were transferred to the nearby Rexford, New York post office. The building, owned by the Alplaus Fire Department next door, was in poor condition and would have required around $250,000 at the time to rehabilitate.

Instead it was demolished in 2017. It was indeed a nice comfortable place to meet one’s neighbors. There was even a water dish on the floor for patrons’ dogs.

This is all very past tense, contrary to the implication of the article that it exists that way today. I wish it did.
