The quintessential nanny: Jaynie Parmenter played Mary Poppins as a Voorheesville high school student and will reprise the role this summer at the Fort Salem Theater. “I’m not playing it the Disney way,” said Parmenter of her Poppins portrayal in 2017. “That’s not what P. L. Travers wanted.”
To the Editor:
I wanted to make you aware of this theatrical production that my daughter, Jaynie Parmenter, is participating in.
Back in 2017, she had the lead role as Mary in “Mary Poppins” for the Voorheesville Dionysians, the high school drama club.
She won Best Actress that year at the High School Musical Theater Awards Ceremony held at Proctors Theater and then continued on to perform at the Jimmy Awards on Broadway in New York City.
Following high school, Jaynie enrolled in the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. She spent five years training and performing in the city before returning to the Capital District.
Jaynie continues to pursue her musical and theatrical career and has been the director of the Voorheesville Elementary School productions the last two years.
She loves to share her artistic, theatrical, and musical talents with current and future performers throughout our region.
Ironically, seven years after her breakthrough performance, Jaynie was afforded the opportunity to try out for Mary Poppins, being performed at the Fort Salem Theater in Salem, New York.
Apparently Jaynie is a natural “Mary” because she was selected for this lead role out of a large group of very talented performers. Her shows are running on the weekends from July 26 until Aug 11.
