ALBANY COUNTY — Following the count of over 1,500 absentee ballots on July 2, the Democratic nomination for Albany County Court Judge appears to have gone to Andra Ackerman, currently a judge in Cohoes City Court.

Following the absentee ballot count, Ackerman has a total of 9,278 votes, while her opponent, Holly Trexler, has 8,570, giving Ackerman a lead of 708 votes, according to Matthew Clyne, the Democratic Commissioner for the Albany County Board of Elections.

Clyne had told The Enterprise the day after the June 25 Democratic Primary that at least 1,719 absentee ballots had to be counted in the primary election; at the time, Ackerman had a lead of 642 votes in the unofficial tally.

Ackerman said this week that she is happy to accept the Democratic nomination. She also has been endorsed by the Independence Party.

Trexler, a judge in Albany City Court, has the endorsement of the Working Families Party. This week, she did not return a call for comment on the results or on whether she would run in November on the Working Families Party line.

Both women are former prosecutors who described how, in their times as city court judges, they had established programs to help defendants in court, including a program for at-risk youth launched by Ackerman and an initiative by Trexler to bring in advocates for homeless and mentally-ill people.
