Pickup hit by drunk driver, rolls over
GUILDERLAND After being hit by a drunk driver, a truck rolled over in front of the Metro 20 Diner last Sunday night, according to police.
A few minutes before 10 on Sunday night, Steven Oberhofer, 25, of Guilderland, was driving west on Route 20 when he went through a red light at the intersection of Johnston Road, according to a release from the Guilderland Police Department. Oberhofer’s 2000 Honda Accord hit a pickup truck, a 1992 Ford Ranger, driven by George Mata, 54, of Colonie, that was passing under a green light on Johnston, the release says.
The impact turned Mata’s truck, landing it near the Metro 20 Diner, according to the release.
Both Oberhofer and Mata were able to get out of their vehicles without help, although the Westmere Fire Department came to the scene for extrication, fire protection, and to provide light, the release says. The Altamont Rescue Squad took Oberhofer to St. Peter’s Hospital for minor injuries and the Western Turnpike Rescue Squad did the same for Mata, whose minor injuries were treated at Albany Medical Center.
Following an investigation, Guilderland Police charged Oberhofer with driving while intoxicated, third-degree assault, passing a red light, and other traffic infractions, the release says. He was released on his own recognizance.
