America at its best

To the Editor:

One of the most uplifting days of this difficult year was the march for Black Lives Matter held in Rensselaerville [“National movement grips rural Rensselaerville as more than 100 march for racial equity,” The Altamont Enterprise, June 18, 2020].

To see more than 100 neighbors in this mostly white part of New York State put aside their own fears and concerns about the pandemic in order to show solidarity with those who have suffered and died as a result of racist practices and attitudes, was America at its best.

The sign I carried had a quote from Reverend Martin Luther King: “Either we build community, or succumb to chaos.”

By marching together on Flag Day, we took a step towards building community, and honored the values that our Constitution promotes, and for which my father and uncles fought in World War II, as well as the dream of a great American who knew we could do better.
