Volunteer voices: Helderberg Ambulance gives scholarship to Savannah Duncan

HILLTOWNS — During the month of May, the Helderberg Ambulance Squad was very busy.  There were 21 transports to the hospital — 18 were medical, one trauma, and two motor-vehicle accidents.  There were eight cancelled calls and four non-transports. Eighteen of the calls were in the town of Berne and eight were in the town of Knox.

The squad participated in the annual Memorial Day Parade. Thanks to the all who participated and to the Helderberg Kiwanis for organizing the event.

The squad presented a $1,000 scholarship to Savannah Duncan who will pursue a career in the medical field. Congratulations, Savannah, and also to all the members of the 2016 graduating class at Berne-Knox-Westerlo.

On May 20, five members of the Helderberg Ambulance Squad participated in several classes where they learned about stroke, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, carbon monoxide and cyanide poisoning, trauma and blast injuries, pediatric airways, abuse and neglect, and taking care of your own. Each of these members earned 8.5 hours of class study.

Be sure to follow the activities of the squad on Facebook.

Now that summer is here, stay safe and drink lots of water.

Editor’s note: Mildred Zuk is a member of the Helderberg Ambulance Squad.
