To the Editor:

I am Megan Reis. I am in my freshman year at Berne-Knox-Westerlo and I love animals, specifically learning how they work.

Did you know BKW offers an agricultural science track in the high school? Because of classes like “Wildlife Science” and “Small Animal Science,” I get a chance to learn that.

Agricultural education gives me the opportunity to learn about things I love and prepare for college. I’m so glad that we have ag educators in our school. With BKW’s agricultural programs, I can get college credits for my dream colleges like Cornell and Cobleskill!

In “Small Animal Science,” students get to learn all about dogs and what they’re bred for. We also learn about cats and what they’re known for, and of course all of the fun medicine facts needed to take care of an animal.

In “Wildlife Science,” we got to learn all about, well, wildlife! We got to do virtual park tours and make projects about invasive species.

One of the things that really makes agricultural education great at BKW is Ag Day. Ag Day is when students get to bring in their animals to show to the elementary students for an on-site field trip. This is definitely the favorite of my ag field trips.

Ag field trips make my classwork mean more because I don’t live on a farm myself. All of the visits to ag businesses in our district really provide me with opportunities to see how agriculture works in and out.

I love agricultural education so much and I’m glad it is a part of BKW.
