Voorheesville needs sidewalks near the library and elementary school

To the Editor:

As a resident of the Village of Voorheesville I find it very disconcerting that there is no sidewalk on most of School Road between the traffic light in front of what was Smith’s Tavern and the Voorheesville Elementary School, and the library at the intersection of county route 208 and Prospect Street.

Voorheesville’s most precious commodity — its children — if approaching the library from School Road/route 208, are forced to walk on a busy road where speeding is commonplace with many (if not most) drivers ignoring the new 30 mph mandate. All residents, especially our children, should be provided a safe route to walk to their library to study or read, do research, or attend special events.

The sheriff’s office does frequently patrol this stretch of School Road and for this we are thankful, but, realistically, we are only one road among the many in the area that need patrolling.

Voorheesville should look at its priorities and divert resources to build a safe pathway to its library — one of its treasures. This would result in a double benefit by also promoting library usage.

Finally, I would like to point out that many local residents (my husband and myself included), as well as workers from local businesses, walk or jog regularly along the School Road/208 corridor. The road is often dangerous to walk on at peak traffic times with cars and trucks barreling by, ignoring the posted speed limit and the safety of pedestrians.

Voorheesville should address the problem and put the wellbeing of its residents first. Let’s not wait until someone is seriously injured to take action.
